We devised this ranking by first creating a list of all online MSW programs. We then eliminated all degrees not accredited Council on Social Work Education (CSWE). CSWE is the top accrediting body for both on-campus and online social work programs. We also focused on “advanced standing” programs. Advanced standing students can complete an online social work degree in one year or less. It will take students without advanced standing 2-3 years on averate to earn their online MSW. Only students with a bachelor’s in social work will qualify for advanced standing.

We then researched each program and determined the approximate full out-of-state tuition cost. The cost recorded in this article is for the full degree. Based on that information, we ordered the universities in order of affordability.

Below, we highlight the top 30 most affordable online MSW programs.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a CSWE-accredited program?

CSWE stands for Council on Social Work Education. This is the ultimate social work accrediting body. If a degree program is CSWE-accredited, it meets the minimum professional standards for a career in social work. If you want to be a social worker, you must earn a CSWE-accredited bachelor’s and/or master’s degree.

How important is CSWE accreditation?

It is almost impossible to become a licensed social worker without a CSWE-accredited degree. It is essential. Ensuring an online MSW is CSWE-accredited should be your first step when researching potential degree programs.

Are online social work degrees accredited?

All the online social work degrees featured here are both regionally and CSWE-accredited. Not all social work degrees are CSWE-accredited. Most schools that are not CSWE-accredited are working toward accreditation. This is not a guarantee that they will meet the rigorous standards. Some social work programs at religious schools are not CSWE-accredited for various reasons. Some programs simply fail to meet the rigorous standards of the CSWE. It’s our recommendation that only CSWE-accredited social work programs should be considered. This is because non-accredited degrees will place sever limitations on your professional opportunities. Most professions are not as strict when it comes to requiring professional accreditation. When it comes to social work, it’s incredibly important.

What does it mean to have advanced standing?

The term “advanced standing” is recognition that you studied relevant material in your bachelor’s degree. To be eligible for advanced standing, students must complete a CSWE-accredited bachelor’s degree. This isn’t to say it’s not worth earning your MSW if you hold a different bachelor’s degree. The primary difference is that the advanced standing option cuts the time it takes to earn an MSW in half. So earning one without a social work bachelor’s degree will still take the normal two to three years like most graduate programs.

What can you do with an online MSW?

Professionals who have earned a Master of Social Work (online or on campus) are able to work as adoption specialists, family advocacy representatives, counselors, public health managers, social workers, and policy planning specialists. Of course, don’t forget the school social workers and healthcare social workers. These social workers are primarily concerned with the social environment of their respective institutions and the social welfare of their charges. Private practice social workers tend to be concerned with the social welfare and behavioral health of individual clients.

Those who complete one of the available cheap MSW programs online will find that they have the opportunity to work in areas like advanced generalist practice, community practice, human behavior, clinical social work, child welfare, community organization, and human services. All of these fields enable social workers to have an impact on the social environment, advancing the cause of social justice through community organization.

Social workers also work at all levels of local government, state government, and the federal government. State and local government jobs often entail working in health and human services, substance abuse programs, and human behavior programs. This is the level where you will find clinical social workers, among other types who are seeking to have a direct impact on the social environment in which they operate. This is micro-level work.

Social workers working at the federal level tend to have great leadership skills and are often more involved in policy analysis, and they often participate in or lead broad health and human services initiatives, operating on a macro-level scale.

Social work takes many forms. A good MSW program will prepare you to work in a variety of contexts, while allowing you to specialize if you wish. Some social workers are wrapped up in developing and perfecting research methods, while others are more focused on direct interventions to improve social welfare and the social environment. One person’s social work might look like policy analysis and research, while another person’s social work may look like working directly with the social environment to improve social welfare. However, they are both contributing in essential ways to improving the overall social welfare of those who need it most. Social work is about people coming together and using their individual strengths, qualities, skills, and abilities to improve social welfare across the nation.

How much does an online MSW cost?

Online Master of Social Work degrees vary in cost. The least expensive online MSW program will set you back less than $10,000, while the most expensive program will cost between $80,000 and $100,000. The overall cost of online degrees in social work is typically comprised of tuition, technology fees, and if applicable, out-of-state supplements.

Online learning through online degrees tends to be cheaper than the classroom-based alternative. Specifically, an online MSW program will tend to be cheaper than an in-person MSW program. You will often find that an in-state MSW program in a public university will tend to be cheaper than MSW programs offered through private schools. These are all factors that one must consider if money is an issue, because while social work is important, social workers don’t tend to make much money.

What kinds of financial aid are available to online MSW prospective students?

First and foremost, FAFSA is still the first place to turn for financial aid, even at the graduate level. While less financial aid is offered to prospective students at the graduate level than to those earning a bachelor’s degree, it’s still the most significant source of financial aid. Of course, many social work programs also offer financial aid to their students, so once you have a list of prospective schools, call around and see what kinds of financial aid might be available to you. Finally, you will often find financial aid in the form of grants and scholarships for students who plan to specialize in a specific area of social work. For instance, you may find financial aid for clinical social workers, those specializing in human behavior, or ones who focus on areas like substance abuse. Social work is a broad field, which means that financial aid can get very specific. So make sure you really dig into your financial aid options.

How long is the MSW program?

Social work programs can take between nine months and four years to complete. This depends on many factors. However, online degrees tend to be faster to complete than traditional ones, so starting with an online MSW program is a great choice. The speed with which your social work degree can be completed comes down to a staggering variety of factors. Social workers in rural communities may have a harder time finding local social services programs, social service organizations, and such with which to do their placements. Rural communities can also make research projects more time consuming. It also depends on how well your MSW program works with you to find appropriate placements or develop research methods that will work in your local situation. Social work programs also vary in structure, how many hours of placement are required, and how much time you are expected to spend on your thesis, if required. Still, online social work programs are definitely the fastest way to complete an MSW program most of the time.

How much do social workers make?

The median annual earnings of social work professionals is $51,760 per year. The group of social workers making more than this generally have at least an MSW and a few years of experience in the field. Those with a bachelor’s degree tend to make less. The highest 10% of earners in social work earn over $85,820 per year. The lowest 10% of earners among social workers earn less than $33,020 per year. Health care social workers, private practice social workers, and social workers working for local governments have the highest median wage, between $57,000 and $64,000 per year. The highest-paying positions tend to be leadership positions within local, state, and federal government organizations, as well as nonprofit organizations.

Unfortunately, social workers join teachers as being one of the most important and lowest paid professions. This unfortunate reality means that it’s a good idea to find the cheapest way to earn your MSW that you can. Social work is not a profession that pays much more money for extremely expensive degrees like the ones you find at ivy league universities. You don’t need to be overly concerned with getting your degree from a top-flight school. As long as your social work degree is CSWE-accredited, it meets the same rigorous standards as the programs at the best schools, and it opens up the same kinds of opportunities.

Job outlook for social workers is good. The BLS predicts 12% job growth in social work between 2020 and 2030. With 715,000 social work jobs already in the market, this means a raw increase in jobs of 89,200 over that 10-year period.

Are online MSW programs respected?

As long as an online Master of Social Work degree is accredited by a legitimate accrediting body, then it should be respected as much as any traditional, on-campus degree is. In most cases, universities do not specify on a diploma whether the degree was earned online.

Online learning is becoming more and more the norm as most people cannot afford to take years off work to earn their degree. As such, online degrees have become just as respected as their traditional counterparts. The main concern with online degrees is the legitimacy of the institution offering them. For a while, online degrees had a bad reputation, due to most schools offering online degrees that were low quality and little better than a scam. This has changed significantly over the years, with some of the most prestigious colleges and universities in the world now offering online degrees. The quality of online degrees can be evaluated the same way that the quality of traditional degrees are evaluated. That is to say, are they properly accredited by regional accreditation organizations and their associated professional organization? If the answer to these questions is yes, then you have a degree that will be respected.

The most important thing when it comes to your online MSW program is whether or not it is CSWE-accredited. If it is, then it will be recognized professionally throughout the social work profession.

What bachelor’s degree pairs well with an online MSW program?

Many bachelor’s degrees pair well with an online MSW. An undergraduate degree in psychology, sociology, and other social and behavioral sciences are great choices. Economics, anthropology, political science, and statistics are also good choices. All the bachelor’s degrees mentioned here are also great choices for minors, if you are planning to gain advanced standing through an undergraduate degree in social work.

What are some things I should know about the social work profession?

Social work is not easy. While most social workers have an office, they also spend a lot of time in the field, traveling to visit clients, or bouncing between service locations. School social workers may cover multiple schools. Staffing shortages and massive caseloads are more normal than not, which increases the stress of the job. Social workers also have one of the highest rates of injury and illness among all occupations. According to the CDC, 73% of workers who experienced traumatic workplace violence worked in healthcare and social assistance roles. According to the BLS, social work is the 20th most dangerous occupation. While this might sound bad, the rate of deaths (at one per 100,000) of social workers is less than half that of the 18th most dangerous job and is much lower than the rest of the jobs on the list.

The purpose of including these facts is not to dissuade you from social work or scare you about your chosen profession. It is simply to provide an honest view of the profession and its attendant risks. The better prepared you are for difficult situations, the more likely you are to avoid coming to any harm when they occur. Part of the training you will experience in your MSW program will be to prepare you for such situations. That’s the good news! Training in de-escalation, conflict resolution, and a more nuanced understanding of the social dynamics involved with the job have markedly improved the safety of social work over the years.
